
The Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base (FOB), Ibaka in Mbo Local Government Area has intercepted a wooden boat carrying over 4,200 litres of stolen fuel in Akwa Ibom. The Commanding Officer of the Base, Navy Capt. Aliyu Abdullahi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibaka. He said that the FOB intercepted the boat at about 12:30 am on February 5, while on a routine night patrol around Ebughu Creek general area of Mbo local government. He explained that the Navy received credible information of suspected smugglers around their Area of Operations and swift into action. “FOB Ibaka gunboat responded swiftly and moved to the location upon thorough search of the general area of a wooden boat carrying over 4,200 litres of product, confirmed to be petrol was discovered,” he said.

The Nigerian Navy has named Commodore Paul Ponfa Nimmyel as the new Commander of its key operational base in Lagos, the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT. Commodore Nimmyel officially took over command from Commodore Rafiu Taye Oladejo in a formal handing-over ceremony held at the operational command headquarters at the weekend. The ceremony, which followed a send-off parade in honour of the outgoing commander, marked a significant transition for the naval base. Commodore Nimmyel becomes the 58th commander of NNS BEECROFT, bringing with him extensive operational and academic experience. A native of Plateau State and a member of the 43 Regular Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy, Commodore Nimmyel previously served as the Maritime Component Commander of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHD) Headquarters in Maiduguri, a critical role in Nigeria’s counterinsurgency efforts.

The Nigerian Navy intercepted and arrested 67 stowaways attempting to leave the country on foreign-bound vessels in 2024, former Commander of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT, Commodore Rafiu Oladejo, revealed. Speaking at his send-off parade at the NNS BEECROFT parade ground in Apapa, Lagos, Oladejo highlighted the Navy’s achievements in tackling maritime crimes, including the most recent arrest of eight stowaways found aboard MSC KATYANI on January 20, 2025. He further disclosed that in 2024, the base seized and handed over 265 bags of cannabis sativa to relevant authorities. The intercepted contraband included 193 bags of cannabis sativa weighing 7,720kg in Badagry (March 2024) and 72 bags weighing 2,880kg in Ilashe (October 2024).”

As part of efforts to enhance safety on Nigeria’s waterways, General Managers and Area Managers of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) have signed a performance bond with the Managing Director, Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, reinforcing a strict commitment to eradicating boat mishaps. The bond was signed at the end of the authority’s two- day management retreat in Lokoja, Kogi. The initiative is part of NIWA’s resolve to enforce safety regulations and improve operational efficiency across the nation’s inland waterways. To further strengthen emergency preparedness, the NIWA MD also inaugurated an Emergency Response Committee, tasked with swift interventions in the event of any maritime incidents.

The Nigerian Navy Ship ( NNS) BEECROFT has intercepted 28 bags of cannabis sativa weighing over 756kg around Long Jetty, Ibeche Beach. Commander NNS BEECROFT, Commodore Paul Ponfa Nimmyel, who disclosed this at a press briefing in Lagos, said the illicit drugs were intercepted February 12th. In a seperate operation, Commodore Nimmyel said operatives of the Base also intercepted a large wooden boat containing 408 empty drums, 3 pumping machines and 8 Yamaha 40HP outboard engines with seven suspects in board while fleeing towards Benin Republic. According to him, the arrest was made after the Western Regional Control Centre of Falcon Eye Alignment successfully vectored NNS BEECROFT Quick Response Team (QRT) stationed at TARKWA BAY on suspicious movement of the large wooden boat around Lagos anchorage.

The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Gregory Oamen, has embarked on courtesy visits to the Nigerian Ports Authority ( NPA) and the Nigerian Shippers’ Council in an effort to foster collaboration and bolster security in Nigerian waters. Rear Admiral Gregory Oamen met with the Managing Director of NPA, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, at Marina, Lagos. During his remarks, the FOC stated that the purpose of his visit was to introduce himself formerly and to seek the NPA collaboration in enhancing security in Nigeria’s waters to support maritime businesses. Rear Admiral Oamen assured the NPA management of the Western Naval Command’s committment to resolving security issues at the Lagos ports and that new measures are being developed to address these concerns.
