The Chief of Naval Staff, Emmanuel Ogalla, disclosed this during the inauguration of newly refurbished accommodation buildings at the Headquarters of the Naval Training Command (HQ NAVTRAC) in Ebube-Eleme, Rivers. The completed projects include two blocks of 94-room apartments built for Ratings at HQ NAVTRAC and a block of56 one-bedroom flats for Junior Ratings at the Nigerian Navy Barracks in Borikiri. Others are the HQ NAVTRAC Command Officer’s Mess and a newly constructed Command Training House in the New Government Reserve Area in Port Harcourt. Mr Ogalla revealed that the navy would rehabilitate additional abandoned accommodation buildings and upgrade existing facilities to address the accommodation deficit faced by personnel across naval formations nationwide.

No fewer than 1,814 young Nigerians have been recruited into the Nigerian Navy within the last six months to strengthen joint military operations in the North East Zone, Niger Delta and Gulf of Guinea. The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Adm. Emmanual Ogalla, said this at the Passing Out Parade of Batch 36 Trainees at the Nigerian Navy Basic Training School (NNBTS) in Onne. He said that the new sailors would be deployed aboard naval warships to engage in counter insurgency as well as oil theft and sea piracy operations among others. “Over the years, NNBTS has upheld its mandate to transform qualified civilians into skilled and competent Ratings for the Nigerian Navy. “The recruitment of 1,814 ratings became necessary to secure our maritime environment, ensuring national economic prosperity.

At least 10 people died when a boat capsized on the Benue River in central Nigeria, Benue State police spokesperson Catherine Anene said. Boat accidents have claimed more than 220 lives in Nigeria so far this year. Overcrowding and poor maintenance are responsible for most boat accidents, while life jackets are not provided, which significantly increases the risk of fatalities. Anene said 10 bodies were recovered from the accident, which occurred, and that a search and rescue operation is ongoing. She said the boat was carrying mostly traders to the market when it capsized on River Benue near Ocholonya in Agatu local government area. Agatu local government chairman, Melvin Ejeh, told Reuters, that around 70 mostly women traders were onboard the boat, which had no manifest.

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) says it is closely monitoring the oil spill incident that occurred at the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) loading terminal, SMI, in Bonny, Rivers State. The incident, which occurred was caused by a ruptured pipeline. SPDC has promptly shut down the affected pipeline and deployed containment booms to protect neighboring communities. The agency in a statement issued by its Head of Public Relations Unit, Osagie Edward said although the spill has reached the shoreline, the agency is closely monitoring the situation from its emergency operations center. “We are working closely with SPDC and other stakeholders to assess the extent of the spill and determine the necessary follow-up actions,” he stated.

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has called on Nigerians to prioritize safety while navigating the nation’s inland waterways during the upcoming festive season. In a statement issued by its management, the Authority stressed the importance of adhering to the Transportation Code, 2023, which has been officially gazetted and will be strictly enforced to ensure safer waterway operations. NIWA emphasized the critical need for both boat operators and passengers to follow established safety protocols to avoid accidents. Operators have been specifically instructed to avoid overloading their vessels beyond approved capacities and to provide lifejackets to passengers at no cost. Additionally, the Authority has prohibited the consumption of alcohol and other banned substances by operators and passengers before or during boat rides.
