As the World celebrates the 2024 World Maritime Day (WMD), the Pioneer Chairman of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) board, Alhaji Ahmed Tijjani Ramalan has called on the Nigerian Government to commit to continuous review of all capacity development programmes of seafarers of both officers and rating cadre. According to Ramalan, who is currently the Trustee of National Seafarers Welfare Board, the review is necessary to ensure that seafarers can operate technologically-advanced and environmentally-compliant vessels for competitive globalised employment as well as value for the country’s investment in seafaring.

The Spanish Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Juan Ignacio, has lauded the efforts of the Nigerian Navy at quelling and decreasing piracy and sea crimes at the Gulf of Guinea. Ignacio made this commendation during the Spanish Navy Warship BAM METEORO courtesy visit to the Western Naval Command, Apapa, Lagos State. The four-day courtesy call is from Sept. 24 to Sept. 27. The Nigerian Navy has deployed 10 elite warships as part of a special sea exercise aimed at curbing oil theft and other maritime crimes within the nation’s territorial waters. Rear Admiral Saheed Akinwande, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Naval Command, announced the launch of Exercise Sea Guard 2024 in Onne, Rivers State. Akinwande highlighted the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to combat oil theft, sea robbery, piracy, and illegal foreign fishing, noting that while significant progress had been made, persistent threats continued to undermine economic activities.

Troops of Operation Delta Safe destroyed 897 illegal refining sites across the Niger Delta region in the third quarter of the year, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, has said. While briefing reporters on the operations of the Armed Forces in Abuja, Buba said the troops also destroyed 370 wooden boats and recovered 48 assorted weapons and 672 assorted ammunition during the period. He said 1,937 terrorists, including 65 notable terrorist leaders and commanders, were killed during military offensives across theatres of operations in the past three months.

The Nigerian Navy Units under the auspices of Operation Delta Sanity have destroyed several illegal refining sites and apprehended eight suspected oil thieves in the Niger Delta region.The Director of Navy Information, Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, in a statement, said the operations were conducted from Sept. 2 to Sept. 23. He said the troops had on Sept. 2, destroyed one Illegal Refining Site with two wooden boats and 28 sacks laden with product suspected to be illegally refined AGO at Isonogbene, Ogboinbiri, Kasama-Azama-Isoni axis in South Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa. He added that three wooden boats and one speed boat laden with stolen crude oil and illegally refined AGO were seized around Brass River, Nembe, Botokiri community in Bayelsa on Sept. 4..

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has confirmed the rescue of over 100 passengers after a wooden boat carrying nearly 200 people capsized in Niger State. According to a preliminary statement from NIWA, which was sighted by our correspondent, the tragic incident which occurred during a night voyage between Gbajibo Mudi and New Gbajibo, is believed to have been caused by overloading. The incident, involving a wooden boat carrying approximately 200 passengers, took place at around 8:30 p.m on Tuesday. while the boat was traveling from GbajiboMudi to New Gbajibo.
