Nigerian Navy, Open to Collaboration Beyond Armed Forces – CNS

The Nigerian Navy says it is open for collaboration not only with the Armed Forces but also other regional, international and local stakeholders. The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, said this would enable the personnel to achieve its mandate of securing the nation’s maritime environment. Ogalla said this while addressing newsmen at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC) Jaji, Kaduna State. Ogalla, whose visit to the AFCSC was to address participants of Senior Course 46 on his command philosophy, stressed that collaboration was critical in achieving the nation’s security objectives.

FG Begins First Train Cargo from Apapa Port

The Federal Government has begun the first-ever train cargo trip carrying containers from Apapa Port to Ibadan aimed at reducing congestion at the port and enhancing efficiency in Nigeria’s transportation sector.The Minister of Transportation, Sen. Sa’id Alkali, made this known at the commencement of the maiden train cargo in Lagos. Alkali said the days of traffic congestion and logistical bottlenecks at Apapa Port were numbered, paving the way for a brighter and more prosperous future for the nation. Recall that the minister on September 12 inaugurated the loading of 30 coach container wagons.

Nigerian Navy arrests eight stowaways in Lagos

The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT has arrested eight stowaways onboard Charminar Panama. They were arrested by its patrol team during its routine patrol of the maritime environment. Base Information Officer, Nigerian Navy Ship BEECROFT, Apapa Lagos, Sub Lieutenant HA Collins said the eight persons were arrested based on actionable intelligence, while they were attempting to exit the country through a vessel Charminar Panama within Lagos anchorage. The stowaways were identified as John Festus, 30, Kingsley James , 34, Egborjede Christopher, 43, Lucky Iweru 46, Frank Uche, 33, Omosheri Wilson, 33, Lisa Segun, 37 and Abu Majid, 25.

Hapag-Lloyd hikes shipping charges to Nigeria by $100 per Container

German container shipping line Hapag-Lloyd has announced a new General Rate Increase (GRI) of $100 per container from India to Nigeria and Ghana. With a fleet of 258 ships transporting 11.8 million TEU per year, HapagLloyd is one of the major container carriers to Nigeria. The German shipping line said that the new GRI will apply to cargo transported in 20ft and 40ft dry containers, including high cube equipment. The Hamburg-based Ocean carrier said the GRI will be charged on all containers being shipped from Mundra, Nhava Sheva and Hazira in India to Apapa and Tin Can Island ports in Lagos and Tema port in Ghana. The shipping line said the rate increase will be applicable from 1 October and “will be valid until further notice”.

Abuja MoU begins training of Sierra Leone Port State Control Officers

In a bid to ensure that member states have an effective Port State Control (PSC) regime, the Abuja Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control for West and Central Africa has commenced a two-week mentor-mentee capacity building program for PSC officers from Sierra Leone. The training, organised by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), Abuja MoU and the Nigerian Maritime and Safety Agency (NIMASA) started with an opening event at the NIMASA headquarters. Speaking at the event, the Secretary-General Abuja MoU, Captain Sunday Umoren, said the mentor-mentee program was created to provide technical support through on-the-job training and cross orientation of ideas.

Illegal Oil Refinery explosion kills 37

At least 37 people, including two pregnant women, were burned to death after a blast in an illegal oil refinery in a community in River State, South-south Nigeria, a report has said. The incident occurred in the early hours in the Ibaa community, in Rivers State, Reuters reported, quoting a local security official and community leader. “Thirty-five people were caught in the fire. Two people who were lucky to escape also died this morning in the hospital,” Rufus Welekem, the head of security in the community was quoted by Reuters as saying.“Relatives had identified some of the victims and taken them for burial,” he said.
