NIWA To Sanction Illegal Operators Within Nigeria’s Inland Waterways

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), says it will impose severe sanctions on illegal operators found within the nation’s inland waterways. Its Managing Director, Mr Bola Oyebamiji, gave the warning in a statement. The statement signed by the authority’s Assistant General Manager (AGM), Corporate Affairs, Mr Suleiman Makama, quoted Oyebamiji as declaring that it was illegal for any unlicensed person to operate within the inland waterways. “No unlicensed operator should be seen anywhere close to the Inland Waterways Transportation after Code 2023 has been gazetted. “The inland waterways transportation code 2023 shall be strictly enforced.

72 Illegal Refineries Uncovered In One Week – NNPC

No fewer than 72 illegal crude oil refining sites were uncovered in the past week, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited disclosed in a video report. The 72 illegal refineries were reportedly discovered and destroyed in Rivers, Delta and Abia states. On August 18, a vessel was said to have been arrested by men of Operation Delta Safe with 12 suspects on board in the Southern Ijaw area of Bayelsa State. “The tugboat was caught loaded with stolen Shell Petroleum Development Company flow lines, which shows that not only did the thieves break the pipelines in order to connect their pipes, but they also harvested oil pipelines as well,” the NNPC said.

Ports worldwide have implemented health checks for seafarers on ships arriving from Africa, following the detection of a new, more virulent strain of mpox. Singapore, India, Bangladesh, China, and Uruguay are among the countries conducting screenings. Recently, an entire ship’s crew was quarantined in Argentina after a seafarer was found to have skin lesions suspected to be mpox. However, subsequent health checks revealed it was chicken pox. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared mpox a global public health emergency for the second time in two years, due to the rapid spread of a new variant in Africa.

The Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, called for the establishment of special courts dedicated to maritime crimes, as it would lead to more effective and efficient justice delivery and curb insecurity. The naval chief made the call while delivering the third distinguished personality lecture of the Institute for Peace and Strategic Studies (IPSS), University of Ibadan, Oyo State. The lecture, themed, ‘Role of the Nigerian Navy in Combating Maritime Crimes and Advancing Nigeria’s Blue Economy’, took place at Senator Abiola Ajimobi Resource Centre, UI, Ibadan.

Pirates Kidnap 10 Passengers on Bonny Waterway in Rivers State

Gunmen suspected to be pirates kidnapped 10 passengers along the Bonny waterway in Rivers State. The attack occurred around 10 a.m. while the boat was travelling from Bonny to Port Harcourt. The incident has raised concerns about the safety and security of passengers and crew members on the waterway, a major transportation route in the region. Israel Waribo Pepple, District Chairman of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria Rivers State District, confirmed the incident, stating that 10 people were involved.

Fight Against Oil Theft Yielding Positive Result– GOC

The Nigerian Army has assured that its efforts against oil theft and illegal bunkering are yielding desired results. Maj.-Gen. Jamal Abdussalam, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, communicated this in a statement in Port Harcourt. Abdussalam said he received in his office, retired GOC Maj.-Gen. Jamil Sarham. Abdussalam highlighted increased crude oil production as evidence of their success, noting that the Federal Government aimed to boost daily production to 2 million barrels. “The division is actively engaged in various operations to achieve this daily production target.
