In a bid to bolster security efforts within the state, the Nasarawa Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in partnership with the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), conducted a one-day interactive and sensitization forum for various security agencies. Bar, ZZ Alumaga, the Executive Director, NASEMA while welcoming the security operatives in the one-day security programme held at De- Crown Hotel, Lafia urged them to redouble their efforts in combating crimes within the state. He emphasized the importance of putting the equipment provided by NIMASA to effective use in facilitating their tasks.

NIGERIA’s oil production rose by 8.4 percent in the month of August to 1.41 million barrels per day compared to 1.30 million barrels per day recorded in July. The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, NUPRC, in the August oil production report released disclosed that liquid crude production, stripped of condensate oil, was 1.08mbpd, an increase of 8.2 percent compared to 1.09mbpd recorded in July. Nigeria’s OPEC production quota is 1.80mbpd, without condensate oil. The 2023 Budget has an oil production benchmark of 1.69mbpd. Nigeria’s oil production has been hampered by oil theft and pipeline vandalism.

The Compliance Team of the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders NAGAFF has alleged that over 1, 800 laden containers are currently trapped at the various seaports in Lagos due to sharp practices by Maritime Police. Speaking with journalists after a protest at Apapa Port, the National Coordinator, NAGAFF 100 per cent Compliance Team, Alhaji Tanko Ibrahim, expressed worries that if not checked, the trend might fuel port and cargo congestion, especially as the end of year activities approach. He alleged that the Police Division was conniving with some shipping companies to get information on consignments and arbitrarily delay cargo clearance.

A Royal Navy warship, HMS Trent, on arrived in Lagos, Nigeria. This is Trent’s second visit to Nigeria, as part of its regional mission to aid allies and partners in driving down illegal activities including piracy and illicit trafficking. According to a statement from the British High Commission, the visit would help deliver capacity training and support maritime security in the region. The commission said the HMS Trent departed Gibraltar carrying an expert boarding team of UK Royal Marines and a Puma surveillance drone. “HMS Trent’s mission is to support West African allies helping countries to develop capability to fight illegal crimes at sea and ensure they can play an effective role in bringing stability to wider West Africa.

Nigeria, Benin Republic, Togo, and Niger Republic have inaugurated “Operation Safe Domain II” as a collaborative effort toward eradicating piracy and maritime crimes within their maritime domain especially the Gulf of Guinea. Speaking at the inauguration, the Director of Multinational Maritime Coordination Centre (MMCC) Zone E, Commodore Aniedi Ibok, said the Operation was in furtherance of the implementation of the MOU on Joint Maritime Operations and Patrols (JMOP) agreed upon by the countries. ”The programme had the theme: “Enhancing Maritime Security Through Collaboration for Regional Prosperity”.
