The Nigerian Army has arrested 21 suspects, recovered 10 boats, five vehicles and motorcycles, as it continued its raid on illegal oil refineries in Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia. The operation at Obuaku and Imo River Waterside in Ipu town, is coming within one month of its crackdown on the illegal oil refinery in Obuaku and neighbouring Isimini Waterside. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the army had during the first two operations arrested about 20 suspects and recovered 16 boats.The General Officer Commanding (GOC), 82 Division, Maj.-Gen. Hassan Dada led the joint military exercise against oil bunkering in the state under ‘Operation Udoka’. The troop destroyed several oil storage tanks, crude oil and illegally refined petroleum products during the operation.

Operatives of the Nigerian Navy arrested eight stowaways, rescued two drowning fishermen and eight victims of human trafficking off the Nigerian Waters. Director Information at the Naval Headquarters, Commodore A. Adams-Aliu said the rescued victims comprised eight female victims of human trafficking, eight male stowaways and two drowning fishermen. According to the statement, the victims were rescued between 9 and 13 July 2024 by teams of Nigerian Navy units across the nation’s maritime domain, adding that a sea robbery attempt was also foiled within the period. Cdre Adams-Aliu explained that the Quick Response Team of the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base BADAGRY, on 9th July 2024 intercepted a wooden passenger boat with eight females aged between 18-23 years en-route the Benin Republic.

The Nigerian Navy uncovered a private residence converted to a massive illegal crude oil depot in Okwuzi community, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State. The Nigerian Navy Ship, NNS Pathfinder. which uncovered the illegal depot, also confiscated over 200,000 litres of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil, AGO, popularly known as diesel, while two suspects were arrested during the operation. Speaking, the Commander of NNS Pathfinder, Commodore Desmond Igbo, said the discovery which was made in line with the mandate of the Chief of Naval Staff to combat crude oil theft and other related vices in the Niger Delta region, was possible through the concerted effort of intelligence gathering.

The newly-appointed Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, has identified the speedy rehabilitation of dilapidated port infrastructure across the nation as his topmost priority. Dantsoho, who was speaking during an unscheduled visit to Tin Can Island Port (TCIPC), also vowed to collaborate with port stakeholders in a bid to deliver efficient services at the nation’s seaports. According to the NPA helmsman, adequate port infrastructure and robust collaboration with stakeholders will enable the nation’s seaports to attain improved revenue generation through efficiency and productivity. Nigerian seaports witnessed 78 incidents including attacks on vessels, accidents, and assaults, among others in the first half of this year, the Nigerian Ports Authority has said. It disclosed this in a document presented by a Principal Manager at the agency, Onyenakeya Bartholomew, during the second quarterly meeting of the Ports Consultative Council in Lagos. The document, titled, ‘Re; Operational returns for 2nd quarterly meeting of the Nigerian Ports Consultative Council’, focused on the security division report of the agency from January 1 to June 30, 2024. It outlined the 78 incidents recorded across all ports to include “seven accidents, four arrests, one assault, 13 cases of damage to NPA property, seven deaths, two cases of arms and ammunition, and five fire incidents.”.
