The Nigerian Navy has successfully rescued eight police officers and one civilian after their speedboat capsized near the Agbura community in Bayelsa State. The incident occurred on December 24, 2024, when the boat, en route to Yenagoa, struck a submerged wreck and overturned. In a statement issued, Navy spokesperson Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu confirmed that Navy personnel deployed in the area responded promptly, ensuring the safe recovery of all nine passengers as well as three rifles belonging to the police officers. “First aid was administered to the injured, who were later transferred to the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa for further medical treatment,” Adams-Aliu stated.

The Nigerian Navy, NNS Jubilee, Ikot Abasi Local Government area, Akwa Ibom, says it has intercepted boat laden with 100,000 litres of crude oil in the state. The Commander of NNS Jubilee, Commodore Martins Fakrogha, stated this while interacting with newsmen at Ibaka in Mbo Local Government Area. He explained that the boat was arrested at about 5.00am while approaching one of the oil wells located in the state. “From a credible source, a large boat known as Cotonou boat was sighted at about 23.9 nautical miles seaward of Imo River entrance,” he said. The commander said the boat was abandoned by the crude oil thieves on sighting a Private Maritime Logistics Support Company (PMLSC) boat with Nigerian Navy personnel on board.

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission says it is set to enhance transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector through the implementation of the Advance Cargo Declaration Solution and the Engineering Audit of Upstream Measurement Equipment and Facilities. It said in a statement that the plan is to track the movement of crude being exported out of the country for the purpose of transparency and accountability. The commission disclosed that these initiatives are being executed in collaboration with P-Lyne Energy and PE Energy Limited. While the Advance Cargo Declaration Solution will be carried out by P-Lyne Energy, the Engineering Audit will be done by PE Energy Limited. It was stated that the Advance Cargo Declaration Solution is designed to establish a robust framework for declaring and tracking crude oil transportation and exports from Nigeria.

The Nigerian Navy says its operatives have arrested two suspects and recovered firearms during a raid of pirates and kidnappers’ camp in Bayelsa. A statement by the Director of Naval Information, Commodore Aiwuyor Adams – Aliu said the operatives deployed under the Operation Delta Sanity II raided the camp at Fununu community in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. He said since the flag off of the Operation 30 December 2024, several arrests and seizures have been made in furtherance of the Navy’s commitment to rid Nigeria’s maritime domain of all nefarious elements. “In this instance, the suspected pirates/kidnappers, who use the camp as a hideout engaged NN personnel in a gun duel for over 30 minutes before succumbing to superior fire power of the Navy team.

Nigerian Navy says it is not relenting in the fight against oil theft as a demonstration of its unwavering commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime domain and addressing the menace of Crude Oil Theft (COT). Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, in a statement said the Navy has achieved significant operational successes under the ongoing Operation DELTA SANITY II. Recall that, 30th December 2024, the Honourable Minister of State Petroleum (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, flagged off Operation DELTA SANITY II in Rivers State. Subsequently, several arrests and seizures were made: in January 2025 Nigerian Navy (NN) personnel, under the auspices of Operation DELTA SANITY II, discovered an illegal refining site around Igbomotoru area of Bayelsa State with large quantity of stolen crude oil. The illicit products were seized and handled in compliance with existing regulations. Ogalla disclosed that on 7th January 2025, NN personnel under the auspices of Operation DELTA SANITY II also intercepted a large wooden boat siphoning crude oil from Enang C Platform in the Iko Area of Akwa-Ibom State.

Nigeria has been advised to integrate canine operations into the maritime sector to safeguard ports, vessels and coastal areas against terrorism, smuggling and piracy threats. The Team Leader for the Anti-Piracy Assistance Security Service (APASS), Anti-Piracy Unit of Trident Group America, Inc., Captain Alfred Oniye, made the recommendation in his paper titled ‘The Use of Dogs in Maritime Security: A Comprehensive Analysis’. Oniye, who also serves as the Dean of the Faculty at City University, Cambodia, explained that maritime security is a complex, multifaceted domain, highlighting the indispensable role of canine units in ensuring maritime safety.
