The Nigerian Navy has flagged off ‘Exercise Obangame Express 2024″, which is an exercise initiated by the United States of America (USA) in conjunction with other Navies of the world, for global maritime security and has been ongoing for 14 years. In his address to flag-off the exercise at Onne, Rivers State, the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, said ‘Exercise Obangame Express’ presents an opportunity for participating countries to work together to develop African-led solutions to transnational threats and challenges with the strategic aim of promoting regional security.

The Joint Military Task Force, Operation Delta Safe, has uncovered no fewer than 50 illegal refining sites within the Biseni forests in Yenagoa Local Government Area, Bayelsa. The Commander, Rear Adm. John Okeke, who led the operation, told newsmen that illegal refining of stolen crude oil was taking place in each of the sites. Okeke said that the team discovered a large pit capable of accommodating no fewer than 10 trucks of Alternative Gas Oil, also known as diesels. ”It is from this large pit that they distribute to their illegal refining sites,” he said. He Recalled that the joint task force had severally warned against illegal oil businesses in the area, and reiterated its commitment to fight the menace ”We have continued to warn, we are not going to relent. We will not get tired, we will continue to work, we shall locate them wherever they are.

The Nigeria Navy, said its anti-smuggling operation, the Forward Operating Base BADAGRY, has foiled smuggling operations and arrested suspects in Lagos. This was contained in statement on its verified Facebook page. According to the statement, “In a daring anti-smuggling operation, the Forward Operating Base BADAGRY of the Nigerian Navy, intercepted and impounded a car loaded with various smuggled items at Ajido, Badagry, Lagos State.” The statement said upon interception, the suspects attempted to escape, resulting in a high-speed chase. In the process, they damaged their vehicle, but the Navy personnel were able to apprehend them. Seized items include large quantities of contraband goods such as rice, vegetable oil, and other prohibited items.

The Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, has assured stakeholders in the Nigerian maritime sector of inclusivity towards the development of the sector. The NIMASA DG, who made the assertion during an interactive session with maritime stakeholders in Lagos, noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, through the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, is urging stakeholders to partner with the Government in developing the sector. He said: “It is important that we develop clear objectives, goals and strategies to advance the industry and align with the vision of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy.

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has launched the reviewed minimum wage document for Nigerian Seafarers, developed in line with the provisions of the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) 2006. The document, which is for 2023-2025, is a product of a Collective Bargaining Agreement that involved employers of labour in the maritime sector, the leadership of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, MWUN, NIMASA and other stakeholders in the industry. Speaking at the event, the Agency’s Director General, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, stressed the importance of this revised document in enhancing the working conditions of seafarers.

The United Nations (UN) has approved the extension of Nigeria’s maritime boundary by an additional 16,300 square kilometres. Nigeria made submission for the extension in 2009 through the presidential committee on the country’s extended continental shelf project. A member of the Committee, Larry Awosika, said the UN approval came after years of meticulous research on geophysics, geology and geography. He said diplomacy also helped to solidify Nigeria’s legal rights over a vast expanse of seabed and subsoil beyond its traditional territorial waters. Speaking in Abuja while presenting the approval report to President Bola Tinubu, the professor said the economic potentials of the newly acquired territory are vast, including increased investments in hydrocarbons, gas, solid minerals, and a wide variety of sedentary species.
