Personnel of the Nigerian Navy attached to Forward Operating Base Escravos night raided the Oteghele community at Obodo Omadinho, Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State, leading to the discovery and deactivation of two illegal refining sites. The Commanding Officer of FOB Escravos, Navy Captain Ikenna Okoloagu, who led the

operation told journalists that “the sites were laden with about 5,500 litres of stolen crude oil and 2,000 litres of illegally refined AGO contained in one oven, nine dug out pits and 28 polythene sacks.” “The successful operation, which was in support of the ongoing Operation

Delta Sanity II, was based on credible intelligence,” the Commanding Officer stated. He continued, “The sustained fight against crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism and other acts of economic sabotage supports efforts to boost Nigeria’s daily crude oil production quantity.

Findings by Shipping Position Daily have revealed that the push for the enactment of controversial Nigeria Coast Guard Bill has again hit another brick wall, as the National Security Adviser; Mallam Nuhu Ribadu has firmly rejected the proposal, citing security concerns. Our correspondent learnt that, the latest development emanated from the

position of the Office of National Security Adviser(ONSA) on the bill, which was recently subjected to public hearing at the National Assembly. Proponents of the controversial bill had argued that a specialised coast guard would offer a focused legal framework and

operational effectiveness far beyond that of the existing naval structures. The push to establish a Nigerian Coast Guard had gained traction again, December 5, 2024, when stakeholders gathered at the National Assembly for a public hearing on the Nigerian Coast Guard (Establishment) Bill, 2024.

Turkish Shipyard Completes Sea Trials for Nigerian Navy Offshore Patrol Vessel

Turkey’s Dearsan Shipyard has successfully completed the initial sea trials of the second of two Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV) built for the Nigerian Navy. The OPV-76 class vessels are part of a $160 million contract signed in November 2021, with both deliveries scheduled for

2025. Construction of the vessels began in September 2022, with the first ship launched in October 2023, followed by the second in April 2024. An initial payment of $35 million was made in June 2022, according to reports. The 76.8-meter-long OPV-76 is designed to

perform a range of missions, including anti-air warfare, maritime interdiction, anti-surface warfare, and special forces operations. It is also equipped for peacetime missions such as anti-piracy, anti-smuggling, and anti-drug trafficking.

NIWA Installs Water Buoys in Niger, Kwara to Boost Navigational Safety

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has enhanced navigational safety by installing water buoys along the waterway from Gbajibo in Niger State to Gbajibo-Mundi in Kwara State. A statement issued by NIWA, March 11, 2025, confirmed the deployment of 10 red buoys and six green buoys. These buoys serve as essential markers, guiding water users through safe navigation channels, warning of potential hazards, and designating protected areas. Suleiman Makama, Assistant General Manager (Corporate Affairs), issued the statement, reaffirming NIWA’s dedication to ensuring safer waterways for all users. NIWA highlighted that the river along this route is generally deep, with a minimum depth of 21.3

meters. The initiative aligns with the authority’s ongoing efforts to improve water transport safety.

LASWA Removes Hazardous Dredging Pipe Threatening Ikorodu Waterway Users

In a swift move to enhance waterway safety, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has successfully removed a dangerously installed dredging pipe that posed a threat to ferry

operators and commuters along the power line route in Ikorodu. Confirming the development, LASWA General Manager Oluwadamilola Emmanuel stated that the agency remains committed to ensuring the safety of Lagos’ inland waterways. “The poorly installed pipe, left behind by a dredging company, obstructed the movement of two passenger ferries and damaged their hulls, creating a potential hazard for waterway users,” Emmanuel said.

Upon receiving reports of the obstruction, LASWA’s patrol team conducted an on-site inspection and swiftly installed marker buoys to guide ferry operators and ensure safe navigation.

Western Ports Police Arrest Clearing Agent for Unlawful Possession of Firearms

The Western Ports Authority Police Command has arrested a clearing agent; Biodun Ojo, for attempting to smuggle small arms and light weapons into the country. The arrest took place, at the Action Free Trade Terminal in Lagos. According to a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Isaac Hundeyin, officers of the Roro Port Division received credible intelligence at about 6:15 p.m. while stevedores were offloading an overtime container. He disclosed that, Ojo was caught attempting to remove and conceal

firearms and ammunition from the container by throwing them into a septic tank. Recovered items included a Remington Express rifle, a Ruger Impact .22-caliber rifle, an English pistol, 42 live cartridges, one round of 9mm ammunition, and 10 rounds of 9.9mm ammunition.
