Nigerian Navy Ship Beecroft Intercepts 19 Stowaways on Europe-Bound Vessels

The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT has intercepted 19 suspected stowaways on Europe-bound vessels. On December 19, the Base’s Quick Response Team (QRT) deployed at Atlas Cove intercepted 15 stowaways aboard the European-bound vessel MT KRITI RUBY. Additionally, on December 21, 2024, the QRT intercepted another four stowaways on the vessel MT MCC YANBU. Preliminary investigations revealed that the stowaways boarded the vessels at night and concealed themselves in the rudder compartment, attempting to illegally migrate to Europe.

NIWA Warns Against Unsafe Boats, Seeks Passage of Coastal Guards Bill

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has called on the National Assembly to expedite the passage of the Coastal Guards Bill to enhance safety and security across the nation’s waterways. Speaking at a technical meeting with boat manufacturers in Abuja, NIWA’s Managing Director, Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, urged Nigerians to avoid using substandard and poorly maintained boats. However, he emphasized the urgent need for the National Assembly to pass the Coastal Guards Bill into law to improve safety and security on Nigeria’s waterways. The call comes in the wake of the December 16, 2024, tragic boat mishap along the River Benue route in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State, which claimed several lives.

The year began with a series of fatal boat mishaps, each more tragic than the last. In January, a deadly boat accident in Rivers State claimed the lives of 20 people, marking a grim start to the year. Just days later, another accident in Anambra State took the lives of 8 more individuals, underscoring the vulnerability of those who rely on the country’s extensive network of rivers and lakes for transportation.

Nigerian Navy Foils Oil Theft, Seizes 100,000 Litres of Stolen Crude

The Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operating Base (FOB), Igbokoda, has successfully intercepted a boat carrying approximately 100,000 litres of stolen crude oil. The operation took place at the Idiogba-Mahin coastline in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State. According to Capt. Aliyu Usman, Commanding Officer of the base, the Naval team acted swiftly on credible intelligence, deploying its Quick Response Team to intercept the wooden boat. The boat was loaded with stolen crude oil and equipment used for bunkering activities, including discharge hoses and pumping machines.

Navy Intercepts Boat Laden With 100,000 Litres of Stolen Crude Oil in Ondo

The Nigerian Navy, Forward Operating Base (FOB), Igbokoda, has intercepted a boat laden with about 100,000 litres of stolen crude oil at the Idiogba-Mahin coastline in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo. Capt. Aliyu Usman, the Commanding Officer of the base made this known to journalists during an assessment visit to the site. Usman said that the Naval team acted on credible intelligence and deployed its Quick Response Team. He said the team intercepted the wooden boat with the stolen crude oil and items used for bunkering activities such as discharge hoses and pumping machines. The commanding officer said that the perpetrators of the crime fled on sighting the response team.

Death: MWUN Declares State of Emergency on Safety Standards

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), said it has observed with deep concern the alarming neglect of safety standards and protocols by Stevedoring Contractors, Terminal Operators, and other port users across seaports, terminals, jetties, and oil platforms in Nigeria. This negligence, according to Comrade Oniha Erazua, Deputy Secretary General, MWUN, in a statement made available to Daily Independent had resulted in an unacceptable rate of avoidable deaths and permanent injuries “among our members, who are exposed daily to the hazardous nature of port operations. One amongst many of such avoidable accidents occurred on 25 December 2024 at berth 9, Tincan Island Port, whence Com. Kazeem Adeshina was crushed to death due to negligence on the path of his employer.”
